I fell in love with the genre of people in their environment after discovering the work of Australian photographer Harold Cazneaux (link to his web site) while at secondary school. He was a great friend of our school’s founder who commissioned him to photograph daily life at the school in the early 1930’s, so we had access to much of his work. Only now do I realise how much his mastery of shaping the light has influenced my own creative work, be it with the pencil or camera.

Tips and Tricks

  • Wash your hair the day before the shoot as it will be more manageable, especially long hair.
  • Have your hair styled as you would normally at work.
  • Women – wear more makeup than you would normally for work, think going out at night.
  • Don’t wear striped clothing if you can help it, unless of course it’s your uniform.
